Obitun Dancers, a painting by Ben Enwonwu ranked the most expensive
artwork sold by ArtHouse. Obitun Dancers sets
a new record at the last art auction, which took place on Monday, May 9,
2016, in Lagos.
The 40x30 inches oil on
canvas piece was sold at the rate of 46 million naira. This makes the work
the most expensive artwork sold at the auction. The oil on canvas painting was created in 1990.
Yusuf Grillo's Threatened Innocence ranked second most expensive work. The 48x24
inches oil on board, produced in 1999-2002, was sold at the rate of sixteen million
naira.
Haze, a watercolour painting on paper, also by Ben Enwonwu,
was sold for 8 million naira. While emerging artist, Nidi Emefele's work titled
Rainbow Cafe, a mixed media on canvas
was sold at the rate of three million naira. The piece was created in 2016.
Three works, Sound of Abundance by Uchay Joel Chima, Occupy Street Wall II by Obinna Makata's
and Makoko Series by Lekan Onabanjo, were donated by the artists in support of
Standard Chartered Bank’s Seeing is
Believing, a charity which works to tackle avoidable blindness.
